use multiply tools to use slection. use the quick mask tool to use your slection. its good becuase you can change it (toddling). double click to change the option. press and hold down shift to get a straight line.
to get a selection form that paint brush you need to mount that little thumbnail and neeed to hold down the control button.it will hold down the selection for you.
